The project Manufakturelle Schmuckgestaltung e. V., based at the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin, brings both of these impulses together. A museum-based initiative dedicated to researching, preserving and documenting the unique, orally transmitted knowledge of manufactural jewellery production, it offers workshops, seminars and open studio access so that historical techniques can be learned, practised and reinterpreted in a contemporary context. In 2015, the German UNESCO Commission recognised the project as an example of good practice in the preservation of intangible cultural heritage (Deutsche UNESCO-Kommission, 2015). It was a great opportunity and privilege for me to be able to conduct this research in collaboration with the project Manufakturelle Schmuckgestaltung with the thoughtful support of the team of dedicated experts.
